What is Table Bay Volunteer E.M.S.?
It is a team of dedicated people with varying ambulance qualifications, who volunteer their knowledge, expertise and time to serve their community.

Area Covered
The unit operates directly under the Western Cape Metro Ambulance Rescue Services. This provincial service provides the unit with an ambulance and maintains it. The ambulance is crewed on Friday and Saturday nights and operates on the provincial ambulance frequencies and dispatching network. The unit covers an area between Llandudno and Melkbos including the City Bowl to Salt River. A large percentage of our calls are done in the Da Nuun and Joe Slovo housing estates.
As we work under the state no patients are ever refused treatment or transport.

Calls & Equipment
When the ambulance is not crewed it is parked at the Cape Town Traffic Department in Somerset Road, Green Point. The crew then stands by on personal pagers, with the paging service provided free of charge by Autopage. There is a paging unit in the Ambulance Control Room, which allows them to push a button to call the crew out. The person assigned to the task for that week would then respond to the page message, by calling in to the Ambulance Control Room. They would then dispatch the necessary person to the call, depending on the location of the incident. All of the members of the unit do this on a part time basis in their spare time. Most of the members have their own personal medical equipment, pager and portable radio. Often it occurs that there is only one person available and they then investigate the call in their private vehicle and stabilise the patient until an ambulance became available. Table Bay responds to an excess of 100 emergency calls per month.

The Table Bay unit works very closely with the local Traffic Department, Private Ambulance Services, Fire Department,
Security Companies and Government and Private Hospitals.

Sponsors
We are desperately looking for sponsors for a new paging system as well as other equipment. The current sponsor of the system is removing the service, which will leave us without a suitable paging system. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please send an email to: tablebay@tablebayems.co.za

Volunteers
There are more and more young people interested in Emergency Medical work and we would welcome them to join our unit for experience and to serve the community they live in. If you are interested in doing volunteer work, please send an email to: tablebay@tablebayems.co.za
